I recently needed to upgrade my iMac. I was putting it off because the new generation of black glass and aluminum iMacs leave me cold. I just do not like their style. So I opted for a Mac Mini and originally thought I would put it on my TV. Well, that didn't really work. I couldn't see text. So off I was to find a monitor for my new mini.

I knew right away I didn't want an Apple monitor, once again because of the design. I originally looked at the Samsung monitors because my living room TV, surround sound, and Blu ray player are all the Samsung with TOC in red. But when I stumbled across this LG monitor, I fell in love. It is simply stunning.

I have had it a couple of weeks now and still love the looks of it. It is so slim and elegant. I have it out in my living room on display and it doesn't bother me. If it were anything less, I would have put it at the desk in the utility room to keep it out of sight.

I will start by saying that this monitor is quite an upgrade from what I had been using. Despite being 21.5", it is almost too big for where I need it. I will have no problem at all getting used to this.

The only issue I have is this. The package comes with two monitor cables, the VGA cable and a DVI-D Single Link cable.

My current video card is an NVIDIA GeForce 7600 GT, which has two DVI-I Dual Link ports.

This monitor has both a VGA port and a DVI-D Dual Link port.

So, when I first tried connecting this monitor to my system, I used the digital DVI-D Single Link cable. This did not work. All I got while booting up was a small window on the screen momentarily containing the words "DVI-D POWER SAVING MODE".

I just happened to have a VGA to DVI-A adaptor lying around, and therefore I am up and running with the supplied VGA cable.

Does anybody have any suggestions on why I cannot go digital with this setup?

If you're the kind of person who doesn't want to pay a premium for style, then you might find this monitor a tad expensive. There are many others with the same features, resolution, and image quality for $100 less than what I paid ($269.99). That said, it truly is beautiful, powered on or off. Personally, I like style a lot, but even so, I find it a little expensive. But I got it and don't regret it. This thing is right out of a design school (and in fact it probably is).

I would like one feature that it doesn't have: the ability to raise/lower the screen in addition to tilt forward/back. But as it's at a fairly comfortable height on my desk, this fortunately isn't a problem.

One other very minor nit: the touch-sensitive on/off switch, located on the top right corner of the base, is a bit too easy to touch accidentally. I'll have to get in the habit of keeping my paws (and those of my cats - no kidding!) away from that spot.
