Monitor will not display VGA text mode (700x420). This mode is used by XP setup, "F8 to enter Safe Mode", "delete hibernation data and boot normally", and the recover console. Most linux boot messages also want VGA text mode.

I put my computer into hibernation and swapped in the new monitor. When I powered up, I saw my Intel logo POST/BIOS screen, and then a "unsupported mode" message. Seems I was running my old monitor in a larger mode than the new one will support.

This was anticipated. I'd planned to use F8 to see the boot options, select VGA resolution to get my desktop back, and then change the resolution settings to match the new monitor.

What happened is that the computer displayed the "delete hibernation data" prompt in VGA text mode, and I couldn't see it. The message timed out, Windows resumed, and (because of the larger screen size on the older monitor) the "unsupported mode" message remained.
